One of the greatest athletes to ever play baseball was the legendary Roberto Clemente. A Puerto Rican athlete, Clemente began his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1955 as a right fielder. His exceptional batting and fielding abilities ... as well as his passion for the sport ... brought him national fame as "the complete baseball player." In his eighteen seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Clemente had a career total of three thousand hits and a lifetime batting average of .317 -- the best among all the players of his time. Indeed, in the minds of his teammates and millions of Americans, Roberto Clemente was truly one of America's greatest baseball legends. This great American athlete is also known as a compassionate humanitarian who was dedicated to helping the suffering people of the world. When not playing baseball, Clemente spent much of his time in service to the poor and underprivileged people of his native Puerto Rico and elsewhere. However, tragedy struck on New Year's Eve, 1972, when a cargo plane loaded with supplies Clemente had helped gather to help the victims of a Nicaraguan earthquake, crashed at sea with Clemente aboard. All of America mourned the loss of this great baseball player and humanitarian.
