Don Balke (B. 1933) "Moose" Signed lower right. Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Wildlife of the 50 States 22c Moose/Maine stamp issued June 13, 1987.
Their large snout and awkward appearance are, perhaps, the most notable characteristics of Moose. Compared to their graceful, gentle relative, the deer, these huge animals seem quite ungainly. But, in fact, Moose are quite well adapted to their lifestyle. Outfitted with broad feet and large, split hooves, a Moose is able to traverse lakes, streams, and marshlands without sinking into the soft earth beneath. In these environments, this remarkable animal feeds on water lilies and other aquatic plants. Sensitive lips make it possible for him to find the foodstuffs he seeks even beneath the surface of the water. Sometimes, in relief of summertime heat and insect pests, Moose can be found swimming, able to paddle for miles without a rest. Adroit divers, Moose can plunge some eighteen feet into the water, remaining below for thirty seconds at a time. Special hairs on the Moose are hollow inside, helping them to stay afloat on these forays despite their bulkiness. On land, Moose are equally adept, using their special hooves to negotiate the winter snows, and running at speeds of thirty-five miles an hour when danger threatens.
