Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Canada Goose" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board.

This painting is original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the Waterbirds of the 50 States Missouri/Canada Geese.
Every year the stillness of the crisp autumn air is broken by the musical honking of the Canada Goose. Flying across North America in wedge-shaped formations, the birds announce the end of summer with their trumpeting cries. The Goose has the widest range of all the North American waterbirds and their seasonal journeys may stretch an incredible four thousand miles. This far-flying bird is accompanied on these long treks by a lifelong mate. Paired birds develop strong family bonds and are so devoted to each other that when one is injured, the other will stay behind to protect it. Both male and female help raise their young on marshy islets, river banks, and tidal flats. Shortly after hatching, the goslings are taken on family outings to the safety of open water to feed. Led by the gander, the greenish-yellow goslings string out single file and are followed closely by the female. The family, along with other family units in the flock, will migrate together to their wintering grounds. It is while the birds are in their winter homes that they can be found in Missouri. There, they feed upon marshy grasses along the ponds and streams and are often seen scouring farmers' fields in search of scattered waste grain. When winter begins to loosen its grip and the gentle warm breezes give hints of Spring, the Canada Goose takes to the air for the long journey back to its nestings grounds. But, the birds will return to Missouri again, as they have for thousands of years, when the Autumn wind sharpens.
