Throughout America's history, small businesses have played an important part in the growth of the United States. From colonial blacksmiths ... to general stores that sold supplies to the pioneers ... to the family-owned shops of today ... American small businesses have bound communities together and strengthened economic life. America's small businesses have provided local communities with jobs, municipal income and most importantly, a service which provides for the best interests of the local citizens. Traditionally, small businesses have observed a high standard of professional ethics and an eagerness to please the customer. These business practices have resulted in a great deal of consumer confidence in almost any established business. Today, small businesses are a large contributor to the United States, economy, for they employ more than half of the country's work force and generate forty percent of the United States' Gross National Product. Indeed, the prosperity of the United States is due in large part to the success of America's small businesses.
