Chris Calle (B. 1961) "John Glenn 1998 Space Shuttle Discovery in Orbit" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands John Glenn - Hero in Space 60c Shuttle Discovery STS-95 in Orbit, 1998 stamp issued October 29, 1998.
The flight plan for Discovery shuttle mission STS-95 lists seven crew members. These include mission commander Curt Brown, pilot Steve Lindsey, payload specialist Chiaki Mukai, and mission specialists Scott Parazynski, Stephen Robinson and Pedro Duque. The seventh member of the crew is John Glenn. A living legend, Glenn is an inspiration to many Americans, not the least of which include his fellow astronauts aboard Discovery. "He's an adventurer, an experimenter, a space pioneer," said the mission's commander, U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Curt Brown. "If it wasn't for him, I'm not sure I would be doing what I'm doing today." NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin concluded, "There is only one John Glenn. (After this mission) Americans of all ages will be reminded that we still have heroes."
