Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "Stag Hound" Signed lower right. Oil on Masonite.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Golden Age of Sail Collection Stag Hound porcelain plate.
In 1851 America's greatest shipbuilder, Don McKay, launched his great clipper Stag Hound. Designed and built in only 60 days, she was "the wonder of all who have seen her," wrote the Boston Daily Atlas. At the time, the Stag Hound's 1,534 tons made her the largest merchant vessel ever built. With a 226-foot hull, a mainmast reaching 200 feet into the sky and spars that carried thousands of yards of canvas, she was truly a sight to behold. Bearing a figurehead of a magnificent gilded staghound, her bow was sharp and thrusting, arching five feet higher than her stern. Like any true clipper ship, the Stag Hound was built for speed. And although she was longer and sharper than any other merchantman in the world, her breadth of beam and depth of hold were designed with stability in mind. The Stag Hound's unique design was revolutionary. She was considered a new idea in naval architecture and became the blueprint from which future clipper ships were crafted.
