The warship Triumph, under Robert Blake's command, had fought incredible battles before, but nothing so taxing to ship and crew as the battle of Portland in February, 1653. Down in the claustrophobic gloom of the Triumph's gun decks, the roar was deafening. The concussion of guns, the crash of broken wood and the whiz of lethal splinters filled the decks everywhere. The gun decks were a hellish sight as well. There was swirling smoke, the flash of powder, and blood that flowed from side to side across the holystoned deck as the Triumph heeled with the impact of Dutch broadsides. On the upper deck, masts and spars came crashing down and buried men in tangles of canvas and rigging. Hailstorms of musketry swept the deck. The captain and his helmsman steered instinctively to avoid colliding with the enemy, but in the acrid fog, the Triumph crashed into a Dutch man-of-war. The decks of both ships suddenly swarmed with men attacking each other hand-to-hand with cutlasses and pikes. For hours the battle continued, with neither side getting the better of it. Then, in the gathering dusk, the Dutch, feeling the sting of British resistance, broke off the engagement, and retired from the bloody conflict. Robert Blake's Triumph indeed bore the brunt of the battle that day, for of her total force of 350 brave men, one hundred had given their lives in defense of their country's, and their glorious vessel's, honor.
