Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Traffic Policeman on Motorcycle" Watercolor on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 11 1/2P Traffic Police Mammoth stamp issued September 26, 1979.
To be a traffic policeman in London, one of the busiest cities in the world, is no easy task. Amid thousands of automobiles, trucks, double decker buses, and pedestrians, these officers must direct the flow of traffic in such a way as to minimize accidents and speed people to their destinations with the least congestion possible. In addition to enforcing parking, speed, and other traffic safety laws, the traffic police also inspect vehicles to see that they meet Great Britain's safety and licensing requirements. Also, these officers provide protection for young school children on their way to and from the schoolhouse. Today, the British Traffic Division performs their duties from high powered motorcycles such as the one pictured on this artwork. This BMW machine with special safety and rescue equipment was designed expressly to meet the British Police Department's specifications, and it has been a real asset to the force in recent years. London's special traffic forces make their headquarters in police stations all across London. One such station, the Marble Arch, which can be seen in the background of this painting, houses London's smallest police station. From this small station and others like it all across London, the traffic policemen spread out to all parts of the city to manage London thoroughfares -- quietly, unobtrusively, keeping the city traffic running smoothly.
