Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Battle of North Cape - The Scharnhorst" Original Oil painting on Canvas.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Battle of North Cape 1943 Scharnhorst stamp issued December 26, 1993.
Germany's last seaworthy battlecruiser, the 26,000-ton Scharnhorst, was the final obstacle to Allied convoys providing supplies to the USSR via the "Murmansk Run." But for nearly two months at the end of 1943, Allied ships sailed unmolested between Scotland and the Soviet ports of Murmansk and Archangel. On December 25, 1943, German Rear Admiral Erich Bey planned to change all that. That day the Scharnhorst and its cohort of destroyers set sail to interdict British convoy JW-55B. What the Germans didn't know was that the convoy was escorted by a far more formidable force than the usual destroyer group. Hidden in its midst was the British battleship HMS Duke of York. On December 26, 1943, the Scharnhorst and nearly 2,000 crew members were sent to a watery grave by the Duke of York and other British warships.
