Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "HMNZS Achilles at the Battle of the River Plate" Original Oil Painting on Canvas Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 45c Battle of the River Plate 1939 HMNZS Achilles stamp issued December 13, 1989.
New Zealand's light cruiser HMNZS Achilles was one of the three Allied warships that caught the German pocket battleship Graf Spee near Uruguay's River Plate on December 13, 1939. She followed her orders to "Attack at once by day or night." Masterful maneuvering during the battle kept her damage to a minimum, while her six-inch guns pockmarked the German. When the Graf Spee fled, Achilles became the major pursuing craft, exchanging final salvos at 10,000 yards as the Graf Spee slipped into what was to prove her final resting place -- the neutral Uruguayan harbor at Montevideo.
