Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Prime Minister Churchill Resigns" Oil on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60¢ Prime Minister Churchill Resigns 1945 stamp issued July 26, 1995.
On July 5, 1945, British voters went to the polls to choose a new parliament for the first time in a decade. Since many voters were in the armed services, three weeks passed before all the ballots were counted. On July 26, to the surprise of outside observers, the announcement came that voters had ousted the Conservative Party. Prime Minister Winston Churchill, therefore, was forced to resign from the office he'd held for almost five years. Although most Britons saw Churchill as an heroic figure for his wartime leadership, they voted to repudiate the harsh conditions of the 1930s. Britain, however, would be too strapped financially to soon recover from the strains of war and carry out a far-reaching program of social reform. Rationing would continue for more than five years after the war.
