Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Winston Churchill, Married 1908" Oil on Masonite.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60c Winston Churchill Engagement and Marriage to Clementine Hozier 1908 stamp issued June 16, 2000.
"My most brilliant achievement was my ability to persuade my wife to marry me," said Winston Churchill of the love and devotion he had for his wife Clementine Hozier. Clementine was the daughter of Colonel and Lady Blanche Hozier of Dundee. After a short engagement, the couple married on September 12, 1908, at St. Margaret's in London. Upon returning from their honeymoon in Italy, the newlyweds moved into a modest home near London's Queen Anne's Gate. The Churchills often held small dinner parties and luncheons for close friends and important political associates. Mrs. Webb, a guest at one of these gatherings, commented about her hostess in a diary, ". . . a charming lady, well-bred and pretty, and earnest withal -- but not rich, by no means a good match, which is to Winston's credit."
