Antique Russian Icon depicting Saint John the Baptist. Oil on wood. This icon exemplifies the thorough Westernization that occurred in many State Church icons. The once stylized hills have become realistic, as has the figure of St. John. Even the traditional Orthodox name "the Forerunner" has been abandoned in favor of "the Baptist."
John, although a New Testament figure, is considered the last of the prophets of the "Old Covenant."
Size: 12.25 x 10.25 in.
