17th C. Spanish School 'Waterseller of Seville" After work by Diego Velazquez (1618-1622).
The original version is considered to be among the finest works of the painter's Seville period and is displayed in the Waterloo Gallery of Apsley House.
Oil on Panel. Appears to be unsigned.
Acquired from a collection in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Sight Size: 19.75 x 15.5 in.
Overall Framed Size: 26 x 21.5 in.
While this version is more closely related to the version in The Apsley House, there are noticeable variations from all 3 waterseller paintings by Velasquez. It appears to be the only version where the boy is looking directly at the water seller. The other 3 versions all show the boy looking down. There are also some other differences such as the color of the pottery, rope around the boy's waist, shape of the glass, difference in the face of the boy and old man, and the similar style of appearance of this version to Velazquez's early bodegones. Specifically, "The Musical Trio". The painting also has the dark brown hue associated with Velazquez's early bodegones. It also appears that there could have been some overpainting to the man's face as the texture is different and some of the clothing.
