- Lot Description
The auction featuring items from the Saul Brandman Foundation. Mask in polychrome carved wood fabrication, made by the Yoruba tribe. Region of origin: Nigeria,Africa. This mask is a Gelede mask, which is worn by male Yoruba dancers atfestivals honoring the women (iyami) in the community, both living and dead. This mask has four figurals mounted on the head in the form of three humans surroundingan animal figural in the center. The face of the mask is in yellow tonepolychrome, with three ebony tone stripes below each of the eyes. The eyes and nostrils of the nose are open, and the mouth isclosed. The mask itself eleven inches tall by twelve inches wide by thirteen and one-half inches deep, and theebony tone acrylic base (which is chipped on the back left corner) measures seven inches tall by eight and one-half inches wide byseven and one-half inches deep.
