  William Thomas Fry (1789 London - 1843 ibid.) after Lady Bell: Maria Bell (1755 London - 1825 ibid.): Portrait des Richard Clark Esqr Chamberlain of London, 1823, Etching

  Technique: EtchingStipple engraving on Paper

  Inscription: Titled and inscribed below the image: "Engraved by W. T. Fry; From an original painting by Lady Bell.", "London, Published for the New European Magazine, by John Letts Jun. 32, Cornhill, 1st May, 1823.". The engraver William Thomas Fry was one of the first to experiment with steel plates. He engraved eight portraits for the second edition of Edmund Lodge's "Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain"; he also contributed four works to Fisher's "National Portrait Gallery" (1830-34) and eleven to Jones' "National Gallery" (1836).

  Good condition. Sheet browned and slightly foxed; creased with a clearly visible crease in the upper part of the image; crease in the lower left corner and sheet slightly rubbed. The portrait makes a very good impression.
