Description: Anonymous artist, Kaaterskill Falls (waterfalls in the Catskill Mountains, New York), steel engraving, 1866. Description: Steel engraving by an anonymous artist, dated lower left: "1866", inscribed in the centre: "Catterskill-Fall". Expressive image of the water of the Kaaterskill Falls falling over several steps. Dead trees and a bird of prey on the rocks in the foreground increase the dramatic effect of the scene. Kaaterskill Falls are located in the Catskill Mountains of New York and have the considerable height of 79 metres. They are one of the oldest tourist attractions in the USA and have been a popular subject in American and European painting since Thomas Cole (1801 -1848, founder of the Hudson River School) visited them in 1825.
