Tobias Stimmer (1539 Schaffhausen - 1584 Strasbourg): Portrait of Johannes Aventinus (1477 in Abensberg, Lower Bavaria - 1534 in Regensburg), German historian, court historiographer, pioneer of classical philology in Germany, 1719, Woodcut

Description: Taken from a book. Inscribed above with the sitter's name, below in Latin. The sheet carrier bears the collector's stamp of Christian Hammer, Stockholm on the front and the collector's stamp with the curved initials RG - presumably 'Rittner & Goupil' on the reverse. Watermark in the sheet. Sheet comes from the Rosenthal Collection - Munich/Hilversum.
