Pieter Schenk (1660 Elberfeld - 1718 Amsterdam): Siege of the Castle of Milan Battle scene, c. 1712, Copper engraving
Technique: Copper engraving on
Inscription: The copper engraving was produced in red colour, which was used only rarely and for special occasions, especially in the 18th century. Inscribed below the image in Dutch and Latin: "Casteel van Milaen wert den 14 maart 1707 door de Duytsers na een belegering...". Signed in the centre below the image "P. Schenk exc. Amst C. P.". Peter Schenk the Elder was a German engraver and cartographer from Elberfeld, today part of Wuppertal. Around 1684 he moved to Amsterdam and became a pupil of Gerard Valck, specialising in mezzotint; he travelled to Leipzig and Berlin. Until his death in 1718/19 he published numerous maps and pictures. Please also note our other works in the Peter Schenk series.

Good condition. The sheet has slightly discoloured due to its age, sporadically minimally spotted. The decorative sheet makes a very good impression.Condition
