Description: Johann Friedrich Bause's "Folge der Gelehrten": Series of 25 portraits of 18th century poets and scholars in copper engraving, published between 1767 and 1797 by the engraver himself in Leipzig. Bause had already begun his "Folge der Gelehrten" before Graff's first stay in Leipzig and his first commissions for the publisher Reich. The earliest engraving in the series, for example, depicts the Leipzig professor and widely read poet Christian Fürchtegott Gellert after a painting by Adam Friedrich Oeser. Oeser was the director of the Leipzig Art Academy and the city's leading artist. A little later Graff painted Gellert for Reich. Half-length portrait to the right in an oval frame decorated with garland at the top on a plinth with inscription plate; on the plinth quill and laurel. Inscribed: C. F. Gellert. Inscribed below the depiction: "A. F. Oeser pinx. // I. F. Bause sculps. Lips. 1767 // to be found in Leipzig, bey Weidemann u. Reich."
