Franz Graf von Pocci (1807 Munich - 1876 ibid.): "Gloria in Excelsis Deo", The Birth of Jesus, 1861, Wood engraving
Technique: Wood engraving on Paper, rolled-on on Paper
Inscription: Entitled "Gloria in Exzelsis" at the top. Inscribed at the bottom "This child is the Son of God / come from the highest throne / Let us praise the same. / Give him praise and honour"; dated and monogrammed "1861 FP" in the lower margin.
Count Franz von Pocci was a German draughtsman, etcher, writer and musician who wrote more than 40 plays for the Punch and Judy and puppet theatres and contributed to the Munich Bilderbogen. He was very productive and left posterity numerous caricatures and around 600 pieces of music, such as the song "Wenn ich ein Vöglein wär." His estate is kept in the Bavarian State Library in Munich.
