During the first half of the 20th century, the Fauves, the Cubists, and the Surrealists dominated the art of France. Fauvist painter, Raoul Dufy, was particularly notable for his scenes of open-air social events, oft presented in colorful, whimsical styles. Flirting with decorative design and Cubism, post 1920 he went on to develop his own distinctive style which came to be known as stenographic. This technique utilized outlines to define figures and objects with watercolors, providing his work with thin splashes of vibrant color. These artistic choices added up to joyful scenes, which the color and free flowing lines embody. Appropriately, Dufy's subjects were exclusively devoted to pleasure scenes, including sailing ships, chic parties, views of the French Riviera, social events, lavish interiors, horse races and paddock scenes.
These preferences of the artist, in both style and subject, are apparent here in Ascot. The gouache outlines and washes of color are demonstrable of Dufy’s best known work, as is the joyful racetrack scene presented.
