Provenance: Mrs. Walter A. "Del" Marting, Cleveland, Ohio, 1956, a gift from Costas M. Lemos, President, Triton Shipping Inc., on the occasion of the launching of the ship, S/S Cosmic at Kawasaki Dockyard, Kobe, Japan, by descent in the Marting family.
Literature: Sylvia Raulet, Van Cleef & Arpels, Rizzoli International Publications, New York, 1987, pg. 126-128.
Other Notes: This brooch was given as a gift in 1956 to Mrs. Margaret Therese Brown Marting by the Greek shipping tycoon, Costas M. Lemos. Mr. Lemos wanted to build a ship to import iron ore from a Canadian mine owned and controlled by the Cleveland, Ohio-based Hanna Mining Company. Mrs. Marting's husband, Walter A. "Del" Marting, was the president of Hanna Mining Company at the time. Because the vessel was so large, Mr. Lemos contracted a Japanese shipbuilder to build and launch the ship, named the S/S Cosmic. Mr. and Mrs. Marting were invited by Mr. Lemos to Japan for the occasion of the ship's launching, which was dedicated to Mrs. Marting. The brooch was gifted to Mrs. Marting at a luncheon in her honor in Japan. It has remained in the Marting family to this day.
