STUART DAVIS (American, 1892-1964) The River watercolor signed Stuart Davis, l.r. sight: 10 1/4 x 14 1/2 in.
Provenance: By descent in a New England family.
Other Notes: This watercolor is a noteworthy and rare example of Stuart Davis’ early style, a representational realisim that was in large part a product of the years (1910–1913) he spent under the tutelage of Robert Henri, who encouraged his students to react to their surroundings rather than follow a particular prescribed technique. Davis was both a participant in and a visitor to the storied 1913 Armory Show. Five of his watercolors were selected to be exhibited, making him, at age 20, one of the youngest artists showcased, and, as a visitor, he was strongly influenced by the bold uses of color and design that he saw in many of the works on display. The River exemplifies the scenes of everyday life that Davis captured in the early 1910s, scenes that are simultaneously gritty and romantic, a careful balance of technical precision and spontaneous, harmonious motion.
