Silver and Diamond Earpendants
late 18th century; the Georgian pendeloque earpendants each featuring a circular top suspending a pear-shaped drop spaced by a bow motif; pave-set throughout with old mine- and rose-cut diamonds; 19.15 dwts.; lg. 2 1/8 in.
Other Notes: These rare Georgian earpendants were likely produced in England toward the end of the 18th century. Named for the four successive English kings George I-IV, who reigned from 1714-1837, the Georgian period saw diamond jewelry become fashionable and desirable throughout England. To supply this new demand, London jewelers sourced diamonds and gemstones from the fleeing Parisian aristocracy during the French Revolution. The pendeloque, or bow and drop, design of these earpendants was adopted in England from the fashionable French court of Louis XVI. Platinum was not yet invented and white gold not used in jewelry, so most diamonds were set in silver to enhance their colorless properties. The scarcity of diamonds led to many Georgian period jewels being dismantled and refashioned during the Victorian era and later, making the present earpendants a rare lasting example of Georgian craftsmanship and style.
