Saint Christina of Bolsena
oil on copper
9 x 8 3/4 in., frame: 13 1/2 x 13 1/2 in.
Provenance: The Estate of a Boston Gentleman.
Other Notes: Saint Christina was an early virgin martyr whose conversion to Christianity was spurred by a dream in which an angel both deemed her a bride of Christ and warned her of her future suffering for abandoning the pagan faith. In this image, the dreaming Christina is shown kneeling to the visiting angel, who reaches to place a laurel crown upon her head. The angel's warning is indicated by the presence of the flames and sword- the implements of Christina's eventual torture and martyrdom. The male head looking up at Christina from the lower left hand corner may be her father Urbanus, who would initiate her torture upon hearing of her Christian faith. - Shipping Info
