The inventive output of 20th-century American artist Charles Burchfield cannot be bound within the confines of one artistic movement. Early in his career, he drew inspiration from the landscapes in northeast Ohio to experiment and cultivate his unique painting style. This watercolor of the Ohio countryside at nightfall dates from a period described by Burchfield as his “golden year,” following his graduation from the Cleveland Art Institute in 1916.
