The weaving is an abstract landscape inspired by James Weldon Johnson's evocative and inspiring lyrics in the song "Lift Every Voice and Sing" (the Black national anthem). The children learned and began singing the song in January:
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the list'ning skies
Let it resound, loud as the rolling sea?
The long process of allowing each child to contribute to the many textures and colors of the weaving celebrates the beauty of community and of imperfection. We are inspired by the message of justice resounding through the voice of nature.
