Ulysses S. Grant
Eighteenth President
Term of Office: March 4, 1869 - March 4, 1877
When General Ulysses S. Grant took office in 1869, there were
high hopes that he would set the country to rights and end the bitterness
that reigned in the aftermath of the Civil War. Grant had a mediocre
career at the Point, but when the Civil War broke out he proved to be the
most capable leader in Lincoln's army: Lincoln declared emphatically,
"I can't spare this man - he fights."
Appointed General-in-Chief in March 1864, Grant and his Army of the
Potomac succeeded in pinning down Robert E.
