Still the Britons would not give over, and general after general
was sent against them. Finally a determined Roman governor decided
to break their morale by capturing Anglesey, the sacred center of
druid mysteries. "Seek your auguries," he told his soldiers, "in the
quivering intestines of the druid priests." Simultaneously with the
slaughter of the druids came the revolt (A.D. 6r) of Queen Boudicca
(incorrectly called Boadicea), widow of the late king of the Iceni.
She was publicly whipped, and her daughters were violated by Roman
officials. Thereupon her tribesmen rose in tremendous fury, marched
rapidly on
