DECORATED BRIDGE AT STEWARTSTOWN. NEW HAMPSHIRE This bridge across the Connecticut River was built in 1882 and re- mained unpainted till the end. This view from the Beecher Falls, Vermont side, shows the bridge after its rafters were replaced and 'dripping' saves removed. In 1931, when a bridge was built upstream and the old bridge torn down, it was found that some of the beams were hardened to the extent that they resisted saw-blades.
