Box of Commemorative Cigarettes from the USS Missouri, 1946. Commemorative box of Turkish cigarettes. White cardboard box with hinged lid. The top of the box has a silhouette of the USS Missouri and the Turkish and American flags. The message “ Welcome Missouri “, Istanbul, Turkey, April 5, 1946 is noted on the inside lid. The box contains 3 rows of 17 tightly rolled Turkish cigarettes packed together in three layers. The cigarettes are wrapped in paper and each cigarette reads “ Missouri “ with an over stamp of the Turkish flag crescent moon in red. The front side of the box has a red paper seal.

- Provenance
This commemorative box of cigarettes was presented to each of the crew of the USS Missouri on April 5, 1946 to mark the visit of the Missouri to Istanbul. The visit was for the purpose of delivering the body of the Turkish Ambassador to the U.S., Munir Erdegun, back to his homeland. The Missouri remained in port from April 5 - 9, 1946, signaling the importance of U.S. - Turkish relations to Stalin and the Soviet Union.
