  The Rolex 1680 Submariner continues the historic lineage of the Rolex Submariner line begun in the mid 1950s. The 1680 case style was first launched as references 5512 and 5513 in 1959. The reference 1680 was launched ten years later in 1969 with the addition of a date window in the dial and the word "Submariner" printed in red. This early version of the 1680 is known as the "Red Submariner". The present watch was manufactured in 1979 after Rolex stopped using red color on the dial. The Rolex 1680 is the last of the classic, vintage Submariners. The present example has a very attractive dial, with even cream-colored luminous material in the dial and hands, and a bezel insert with just a slight patina that really emphasizes the classic warm appearance of a vintage Submariner.

  Condition

  Dial and hands are in excellent condition. Luminous material in the dial and hands is fully intact, aged to a beautiful creamy color, and appears to be original to the watch. The bezel insert has aged to a slightly blue patina. The case is nice and thick, with only minor signs of perhaps a single polishing. The solid link Oyster bracelet is tight and in excellent condition. Movement running at time of cataloging. Overall in excellent condition.
