  The Rolex 1680 Submariner continues the historic lineage of the Rolex Submariner line begun in the mid 1950s. The 1680 case style was first launched as references 5512 and 5513 in 1959. The reference 1680 was launched ten years later in 1969 with the addition of a date window in the dial and the word "Submariner" printed in red. This early version of the 1680 is known as the "Red Submariner". The present watch was manufactured in 1978 after Rolex stopped using red color on the dial.  It is a truly beautiful example of a historic reference.

  Condition

  Dial and hands in beautiful condition. Luminous material in the dial fully intact, turned a beautiful creamy color, and appears original to the watch. Hands likely replaced early in the watch's life. Case perhaps lightly polished once though still full and substantial, with few scratches commensurate with age and wear. The bracelet in very good condition with very minor stretch; scratches more evident on the side of the bracelet extending from the "12" hour marker. Movement running at time of cataloging. Overall in very nice condition.
