Manuscript document signed by Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), as Governor of Virgnia (1779-1781). Richmond, Virginia, 1 March 1781. 1 page, 8 x 13 in. Docketed to verso.
A Revolutionary War-era land grant signed by Thomas Jefferson as Governor of Virginia for James Dillard, who purchased 400 acres in Amherst County, Virginia, for two pounds sterling.
Jefferson was elected Governor of Virginia for two consecutive one-year terms in 1779 and 1780. During his administration, he moved the state capital from Williamsburg to Richmond, where this document was signed in March of 1781. Just two months earlier, the American traitor General Benedict Arnold had invaded Virginia and burned Richmond when a fleeing Jefferson refused to hand over the city's tobacco and military supplies. Despite the war raging on and raids continuing across the state, Jefferson returned to his state capital and issued land grants to its citizens.
