Cast metal soldier's identification disc. Obverse with Federal shield and perimeter legend: "Against Rebellion / 1861." Reverse stamped, "D.M. Spearry. / Co. K. / 141st Regt. P.V."
Patriotic identification disc for Private Dorson M. Spearry (alt. Sperry), who enlisted on 27 August 1862 into Company K of the 141st Pennsylvania Infantry.
At the Battle of Gettysburg, the 141st Pennsylvania fought in the 3rd Corps under General Sickles. Just before Gettysburg, this regiment had been annihilated at the battle of Chancellorsville in a desperate charge on the 3rd day of the battle, losing over half its men in casualties. At Gettysburg, the regiment fought to the right of the peach orchard, one of the most exposed areas of the battlefield. Again, they sustained terrible losses, sustaining 136 casualties. Notably, Sperry is listed on the Pennsylvania Memorial at Gettysburg.
