1. Outdoor albumen CDV of E.A. Lingo's photographic studio.
2. Vignetted albumen CDV bust-length portrait. Uniontown, Pennsylvania: D.M. M'Elhinney, n.d Photographer's imprint to mount verso.
Rare CDV view of the photographic studio of Edward A. Lingo, a successful artist who worked in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. A well-executed street scene, examination of the exterior of Lingo's storefront reveals many charming details: framed samples of his photographs, window advertisements for gemtype portraits, and a wonderful painted wooden sign featuring Lingo's name, a box camera, and an artist's palette. A lone man stands in front of the studio, most likely Lingo himself.
Edward Lingo (1843 - 1910) came to Uniontown during the Civil War after having lived for a time in Cumberland, Maryland. Lingo first built his studio, which quickly became successful, and then shrewdly invested his profits in other lucrative real estate ventures in and around Uniontown. He retired about 15 years before his death and spent that time traveling extensively.
Images of photographic studios from the Civil War era are very uncommon and highly desirable. This view comes with a second image of a bearded man who may be Lingo himself and who resembles the man in front of the studio. This image has the backmark of a Uniontown competitor, D.M. McElhinney.
