- Lot Description
A remarkable archive of Captain Michael McMullen, Co. D, 22nd New York Cavalry, who was wounded by gunshot at Cedar Creek. Items include:
1. Surgically removed bullet. With later note reading: "Bullet removed from the arm of Josephine's Great Grandfather Michael McMullen. Feb. 1865."
2. Certificate for Leave of Absence. Partly printed document completed in manuscript. Rochester, NY, 23 January 1865. 1 page, 4to. Completed for Captain M. McMullen detailing his injury: "He has gunshot comminuted fracture of right arm lower third. Wound received at Cedar Creek Nov'r 12th 1864." The acting assistant surgeon, A. Backus, notes that he is "not able to travel" and requests a leave for at least 20 days.
3. Certificate to Explain Absence on Account of Sickness. Partly printed document completed in manuscript. Annapolis, Maryland, 21 February 1865. 1 page, 4to. On Officers' Hospital, Middle Department letterhead. Stamped signature.
Michael McMullen enlisted as a Captain at Rochester, New York, and was commissioned into Company D of the 22nd New York Cavalry on 30 January 1864. Attached to the IX Corps, they fought in Grant's Overland Campaign. McMullen was wounded in the aftermath of the Battle of Cedar Creek (19 October 1864), receiving a gunshot wound that caused a fracture. He would not recover sufficiently from his wounds detailed here and would be discharged from the army on 8 March 1865.
A rare removed bullet relic with accompanying documentation of the wound.
