$165 Bounty!...Freemen of Old Strafford! Letterpress broadside. Dover, New Hampshire: N.p., August 1862. Singed in type by recruiting officers Nat. Low, Jr. and B. Frank Rackley. Visible 24 x 32 1/4 in., framed to 31 3/4 x 39 3/4 in.
A rare New Hampshire recruitment broadside. Issued in 1862 when Lincoln wanted more troops but hesistated due to concerns about public opinions of the war, especially in light of recent losses in the Eastern Theater. New Hampshire governor Nathaniel S. Berry assured Lincoln that states would respond positively to a call for more troops. During Berry's term, New Hampshire organized 15 infantry regiments, 3 companies of sharpshooters, 4 companies of cavalry, and 1 company of heavy artillery.
