- Lot Description
To the Citizens of Macon. Letterpress broadside. Head Quarters, Macon, [Georgia], 30 July 1864. Signed in type by Joseph E. Brown. Parrish & Willingham 2867.
An exceedingly scarce broadside issued by the Governor of Georgia, Joseph E. Brown, in the face of Sherman's approaching Army. The language used is both desperate and frantic.
In full: "The enemy is now in sight of your houses. We lack force. I appeal to every man, Citizen or Refugee, who has a gun of any kind, or can get one, to report at the Court House with the least possible delay, that you may be thrown into Companies and aid in the defense of the city. A prompt response is expected from every patriot."
VERY RARE. No copies have ever sold at auction. OCLC locates only microform copies available. Parrish & Willingham locate only 2 institutional copies, both local to its origin: the University of Georgia and the Washington Memorial Library, Middle Georgia Regional Library in Macon.
