Hd.-Qrs. 51st Regt. Va. Vol. ...Special Order. Partly printed document completed in manuscript. Signed by Col. Gabriel C. Wharton and Adjt. Genl. Charles A. DeRusey. Camp Narrow's, [Giles County, Virginia], 11 July 1862. 1 page, fragment, approx. 3 1/4 x 3 in. on blue paper. Recipient to verso.
A small parole document for "Jackson," with the countersign designated as "Kernstown." Signed by the regiment's commanding Colonel Gabriel C. Wharton and the Adjutant General Charles DeRusey. In July 1862, the 51st Virginia had returned from the defeat at Fort Donelson to the Department of Southwestern Virginia. The regiment was reorganized and Colonel Wharton commanded the brigade.
This small document with a countersign "password" would allow Jackson to cross the picket lines. Extant ephemeral documents such as these are very scarce.
