Framed. Good condtion. Robert Gottlieb Collection2023 - Shchukin Gallery The lot is an original front page of Illustrated London News featuring an illustration by William Heysham Overend titled The Zulu War, Garrison of Fort Pearson, on the Lower Tugela, at Gatling Gun Practice. The image shows three British soldiers alongside a large Gatling gun, preparing for practice, likely in anticipation of the Battle of Ulundi, which took place on 4 July 1879. This battle was the final major confrontation of the Anglo-Zulu War, where the British forces decisively defeated the main Zulu army. The victory effectively shattered the military power of the Zulu kingdom, leading to the capture and destruction of the royal kraal at Ulundi, marking the end of the conflict and the consolidation of British control over Zululand. William Heysham Overend (1851 ? 1898) was a British marine artist and book illustrator. Beginning as a painter, Overend moved into illustration. His connection with the Illustrated London News began in 1875 when he illustrated the Sir George Nares Arctic expedition. For the next decade at least, he was one of the most prominent illustrators, alongside with Richard Caton Woodville. Overend also illustrated articles in The English Illustrated Magazine, Good Words, The Rambler, The Pall Mall Magazine, The Illustrated Naval and Military Magazine, The Graphic, The Magazine of Art, The Leisure Hour, London Society, St. Nicholas, and The Penny Illustrated Paper. 22.75*17/ 15*9 in
