Robert Gottlieb Collection2023 - Shchukin Gallery Original engraving published by the Illustrated London News on January 27, 1894.The image depicts a critical moment in the South African War: the deaths of Major Wilson & the Shangani Patrol, in Matabeleland, now a part of Zimbabwe. The Shangani Patrol was a British military unit of 34 men, led by Major Allan Wilson, sent to pursue the fleeing Matabele king, Lobengula, during the Matabele War of 1893. On December 4, 1893, the patrol encountered a much larger force of Matabele warriors near the Shangani River, and despite being heavily outnumbered, they fought bravely. The battle ended in a massacre, with Wilson and most of his men killed, while only a few survivors managed to escape. The following defeat of the Matabele forces and the subsequent annexation of Matabeleland by the British South Africa Company marked a significant chapter in the suppression of indigenous resistance, as the British consolidated their control over the region.Richard Caton Woodville (1856?1927) was a British genre painter and illustrator, known for his dynamic depictions of military life, particularly scenes of the British Army. His illustrations, which appeared in magazines like The Illustrated London News, were widely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. 20*25.5/ 12*17.75 in
