This atmospheric oil on canvas (signed lower left), measuring 12.79 x 16.14 inches, is listed under number 0765 (page 477) in the catalog raisonne of Paul DŽsirŽ Trouillebert's painted works, compiled by Thomas Maier and Bern Mžllerschon (Stuttgart, 2004). Born in Paris, Trouillebert was originally a portraitist trained by HŽbert and Jallabert, but his style shifted after meeting Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. Like the master of Ville-d'Avray, Trouillebert devoted himself to plein air landscape painting, capturing poetic watersides, gentle dawns, and glowing sunsets. With a light and transparent touch, Trouillebert drew from Corot's soft tonalities to convey nature's luminous, atmospheric moods. His landscapes often featuring tranquil waterways, forests, and rural scenes were warmly received by the public. He exhibited at the Salon beginning in 1865 and is represented in numerous museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the MusŽe d'Orsay in Paris. This serene riverine scene, complete with a fisherman and a distant mill, exemplifies the Barbizon-influenced charm that defines Trouillebert's enduring appeal.
