Robert Gottlieb Collection2023 - Shchukin Gallery Nikolai Suetin (1897 ? 1954) was a key figure in Russian Suprematism, applying Kazimir Malevich's theories to both painting and everyday life. Studying at the Vitebsk Art School (1918?1922) under Marc Chagall, he became a close collaborator of Malevich and a strong advocate for Suprematism, contributing to its spread through exhibitions, publications, and the founding of the Unovis art group. In 1922, Suetin followed Malevich to Petrograd (Saint Petersburg) after Malevich's dismissal from Vitebsk, working at the Institute of Artistic Culture and collaborating on unbuilt Suprematist architectural designs. He also contributed to the design of the Soviet pavilion at the 1937 Paris Exposition and began creating porcelain designs as artistic director at the Lomonossov State Porcelain Factory in 1932. After Malevich's death in 1935, Suetin decorated his coffin with Suprematist motifs and organized his funeral, marking the last expression of the style. In the 1930s, Suetin shifted focus to applied arts, distancing himself from Suprematism, which had become disfavored by the Soviet government. 26*17.25/ 17.5*8.75 in
