Robert Gottlieb Collection2023 - Shchukin Gallery The Battle of Somosierra took place following the surrender of general Dupont's forces at Bailn. This failure upset Napoleon and he decided to personally intervene in Spain. His path was blocked by Spanish troops at the Somosierra Pass. The infantry assault having proved ineffective, Napoleon ordered a cavalry charge to take the Spanish positions, and more precisely a Spanish artillery battery, which was shelling the French Army. The charge was conducted by the Poles, led by Major (Chef d'escadron) Kozietulski who shouted to his men "Forward !" and was answered by a choir of "Long live the Emperor !" (Vive l'Empereur !), even if the legend later magnified this action, transforming his words in "Forward you sons of dogs, the Emperor is watching you". The squadron, between 125 and 150 men strong managed to take the battery but suffered heavy losses, casualties estimations running between 50 and 100 men killed or wounded.Keith Rocco is an American artist specializing in historical and military subjects, with a particular focus on the Napoleonic Wars, the American Civil War, and World War II.
