- Lot Description
An enchanting oil on canvas by Jules RenŽ HervŽ, measuring 100 x 81 cm, signed lower left and again on the reverse. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, this painting captures a tranquil scene in the Blanchefontaine area of HervŽ's native Langres. Born in Langres in 1887, HervŽ studied under Fernand Cormon and Jules Adler before beginning to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes Franais in 1910. Earning a silver medal in 1914 and a gold medal in 1925, he split his life between Paris and Langres. Nicknamed Òthe last of the Impressionists," HervŽ was known for luminous brushwork, creating gentle flashes of color against subtle backgrounds. His subjects ranged from the everyday life and landscapes of Langres to lively Parisian scenesÑsuch as dancers in the foyer of the OpŽraÑexpressed with delicate observation and poetic feeling. Today, his works appear in museums worldwide, including Annecy, Chicago, Montreal, New York, Paris, and Dijon.
