- Lot Description
Jean-Michel Basquiat, American, (1960-1988). (Family Portrait), 1983, Acrylic and oil sticks on canvas, measures 48" x 36". Signed lower right with the monogram and dated 83, 1983. In fairly good condition apart from an old cut of the canvas on the lower middle part which has been fixed, this seems a minor issue, it's hardly noticeable unless looked close to the Artwork. Provenance, Private N.Y.C collection. The painting depicts four faces each in furious impression and different symbols pointing at the story behind the impressions. The two faces on the top are his parents, the one to the left is for the dad, and the one on the right of his mother. The three faces on the bottom are for the artist, the first to the right is the artist, and the others are for his two at the time, young sisters. The other symbols, the eye, and the long black arrow the ends pointing to him resemble a family issue created by the Artist's parents and it does reflect unconsciously in his painting. This is one of the artist's early pieces, it's rare, never seen before, and fresh on the market.
