Louis-Aime Japy
A pupil of Francois-Louis Francais and J.-B.-Camille Corot, Louis-Aime Japy disdained the family industry to devote himself to landscape painting. He made his debut at the Salon de la Societe des Artistes Francais in 1864 and exhibited there regularly until 1914. He was awarded a medal in 1870, a second-class medal in 1873, and the silver medal at the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900. He became a member of the Artistes francais in 1883, appeared in a group exhibition at Georges Petit's in Paris in 1888, and was named Chevalier de la Legion dhonneur in 1906. Japy visited Italy at the beginning of his career and brought back several subjects for paintings, but he mainly painted French sites, particularly in the Jura and his native Doubs. He also brought back many landscapes from his travels in Brittany, Picardy and the Oise. He was fond of delicate studies of light and had a quivering touch, without neglecting the precision of the drawing. Considered one of Corot's most gifted students, Louis-Aime Japy knows how to translate nature with great sensitivity. The poetry that emerges from his pastoral scenes is often bathed in a melancholic light. His works are present in many museums.
