Fernand HERBO, Born on 18 March 1905 in Orchies - Died on 21 August 1995 (aged 90).
Fernand Herbo was a painter from Montmartre established in Honfleur (Calvados), born in Orchies in 1905, and died in Honfleur in 1995.
In his youth in Montmartre, Fernand Herbo created posters, theatre and film sets, and rubbed shoulders with the painters Maurice de Vlaminck and Othon Friesz.
In 1938, Herbo left Paris and settled permanently in Honfleur. His work, powerful and imbued with dark colours, dedicated to the sea, boats and ports, earned him the title of painter to the French Navy in 1944. It was from this date that the traditional anchor of the painters of the Navy was affixed to his signature.
In 1945, the State acquired his work Le quai de Jemmapes (1942), and assigned it to the Musee National dArt Moderne du Centre Georges-Pompidou.
In the early 1950s, Fernand Herbo met the French gallery owner and poet Katia Granoff, who exhibited him in her new gallery in Honfleur. Katia Granoff, a great talent scout (she exhibited and revealed Marc Chagall and Othon Friesz, among others, and promoted the rediscovery of Claude Monet's Water Lilies series) thus introduces the ecole de l'Estuaire de la Seine, of which Fernand Herbo is one of the representatives.
Fernand Herbo opened the Bar des Artistes in Honfleur in 1952 (now the Bistrot des Artistes) in Honfleur, the ceiling of which was entirely decorated by Herbo and above which his studio is located. The Bar des artistes then became a meeting place for Honfleur's painters.
Fernand Herbo is responsible for more than 1,000 works, mainly oil paintings and watercolours. The city of Honfleur paid tribute to him by naming one of its quays after him.
He died in 1995, and several of his works are exhibited at the Eugne-Boudin Museum in Honfleur, where a room bears his name.
The town of Honfleur has given its name to a quay in the city.
The Eugne-Boudin Museum in Honfleur holds 23 paintings by Fernand Herbo.
